Games, Strategies, Economics

August 12–16

9:00 AM–3:30 PM
girls in grades 5–8

Has your daughter ever managed a network of power plants, bidding for contracts and carefully watching the oil and coal markets to turn a profit? Has she scrutinized the trade off between replanting heirloom seeds to increase crop yields and selling them to hire more labor?

We understand the importance of strategic thinking, planning ahead, and decision analysis for our children, but struggle to provide them authentic opportunities to practice these skills. In this Stuart strategy camp, girls are given the chance to manage a business, a farm, a city, a household, a port town, a factory, and more as they learn the basics of game theory, tactics, and analysis.

Nestled in the same town that was home to John Nash himself, our campers make trades, invest resources, hire workers, and master articulate strategy through games that are accessible, entertaining, and most importantly, fun!

Instructor: Sean Malloy, Economics Teacher at Stuart

STEM: SIY – Sew It Yourself (Grades 5–8)

Sew It Yourself

August 12–16

9:00 AM–3:30 PM
GIRLS IN GRADES 5–8

This summer camp is aimed at students who have an interest in fashion, sewing, design, textiles, and textile art. Students do not have to have any prior experience with sewing or textiles - in fact, it’s better if they come completely fresh!

Students will have the ability to choose their own sewing project, using their new-learned skills to select a sewing pattern (from a pre-approved list of simple projects), fabric type and color, fastenings, and embellishments up to a certain budget. By the end of the week, attendees will have completed their own personal sewing project, chosen from a pre-approved list of simple patterns. Attendees will also have learned essential machine and hand-sewing skills, including how to:

  • Thread, set up, and use a sewing machine.
  • Sew basic seams.
  • Make sure edges of fabric don’t fray.
  • Safely and effectively use an iron for sewing projects.
  • Identify and choose different types of fabric for different projects.
  • Measure someone up for a garment, if applicable.
  • Read a simple sewing pattern.
  • Pin sewing pattern pieces to fabric and cut out project pieces.
  • Add zips, poppers, buttons and other fastenings to a project.
  • Add embellishments such as beads and embroidery.
