Stuart junior named a 2027 NJ Governor's STEM Scholar

Congratulations to junior Aurelia Lopez-Spencer on being named to the 2027 class of The Governor's STEM Scholars (GSS). New Jersey’s GSS students are top high school and college students who are committed to being the future of the state's STEM workforce and economy. Aurelia joins 111 Scholars from 20 New Jersey counties, and upon graduation, she will join a cohort of over 1,200 Scholars.

At Stuart, Aurelia has served as co-head of her school’s FIRST Robotics team for two years and has worked with its sustainability committee on efforts to make the school more environmentally friendly. With interests in humanitarian and environmental engineering, Aurelia has volunteered twice with the Appalachian Service Project, helping repair homes affected by natural disasters. She has also researched, designed, and built a hydroponics system at her school and is interested in biomedical engineering and the intersection of service and science. Outside of STEM, Aurelia enjoys songwriting and painting and participates in her school’s theater program as both a performer and backstage crew member.

Aurelia shared: "I am thrilled to be a part of the Governor's STEM Scholar program this year and build my skills in research, collaboration, and innovation to understand the process that brings new solutions to prevalent world issues. I am passionate about biomedical and sustainability engineering, and am looking forward to working with other students on a research project that addresses the UN's sustainability goals. Additionally, I am eager to network with STEM peers and professionals where I can grow connections with those working in varying fields of science and engineering."
