Stuart was recently recognized by the College Board for the third year in a row with the Female Diversity Award in Computer Science for expanding young women’s access to both AP Computer Science A and AP Computer Science Principles.
More than 1,100 institutions achieved either 50% or higher female representation in AP computer science courses or a percentage of the female computer science exam takers meeting or exceeding that of the school’s female population during the 2021-22 school year. In 2022, Stuart was one of only 64 to be recognized for closing the gender gap in both AP computer science courses.
According to data from the Stuart Class of 2022, about 1/3 of the class planned to go into STEM fields, and about half of that was engineering/computer science interest. We asked two Upper School students, Lola and Annarose, to share about their experiences going through the computer science curriculum at Stuart.
“At Stuart, I am immersed in a rigorous computer science curriculum, inspiring within me a passion that I hope to pursue in the future. Through Stuart’s introductory courses, I developed strong foundational skills, propelling me towards a number of advanced classes where I could further enhance my computer science experience and explore my newfound passion. Throughout these higher level courses, my classmates and I are consistently encouraged to think critically and problem solve as we unpack new concepts and guide each other through our reasoning, remembering to ask “why?” with each new question we encounter.” - Lola, Grade 10
"Throughout my past 10 years at Stuart, I have been able to experience firsthand Stuart’s development of the computer science program. Though I have only taken Intro to Computer Science this year, it has opened my eyes to the many opportunities within this STEM field. Within the classroom, Stuart has allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of computer science by allowing me to develop my curiosity, determination, and critical thinking skills. These experiences have encouraged me to deepen my interests in STEM and allowed me to explore computer science with an open and confident mindset." - Annarose, Grade 10
