Stuart seventh grader among winners of Phillips’ Mill playwriting competition

Stuart seventh grader among winners of Phillips’ Mill playwriting competition

Before spring break, seventh grade student Gwen Kocar had one of the winning plays selected in Phillips’ Mill’s annual juried playwriting competition, Play with Words. This competition is open to students ages 12–18 outside the New Hope, PA area and gives young writers the opportunity to have their work critiqued by trained judges. Winners also have the honor of having their play read on the stage of the historic Phillips’ Mill.

Gwen’s play “Apples” featured a strong female main character. Her creative goal was to make the play a comedy and bring laughter to the audience. She wrote the play in small pieces each day, incorporating feedback from friends and peers along the way. A few weeks after submitting it, she received the exciting news that she had won.

As the youngest student among the winners, Gwen learned to not let fear hold you back from trying new things. She is grateful for the opportunity and the experience.

Congratulations, Gwen!
