Sixth graders take part in the Global Read Aloud program

Sixth grade English teacher Julie Ray and Director of Library Services Deb Koehler are co-teaching The Jumbies by Tracey Baptiste as part of the Global Read Aloud program. They read it aloud to the students and are collaborating with a school in Wisconsin to discuss the book and hopefully get a deeper understanding of the story and any themes presented.

The lesson shown here is on Inference. Students first watched a short Pixar film with no dialogue and used clues to figure out what was going on. After filling out a sheet answering questions with inferences, the class discussed clues that led to each inference. In an informal poll at the end, students agreed that the exercise gave them a better understanding of inferences.
