Eighth graders deliver TED Talk-style presentations on social justice issues

One of the signature experiences of eighth grade at Stuart Country Day School of the Sacred Heart is the TED Talk–style presentation, an opportunity for students to research an issue they care deeply about and speak with purpose.

Just before winter break, eighth graders took the stage to share thoughtfully researched presentations on real-world issues rooted in both personal experience and broader social impact. Topics ranged from wage inequality and access to health care to cyberbullying and the importance of honest conversation within a school community.

Through this experience, students strengthened essential skills in research, analytical writing, and public speaking. They learned how to organize ideas with clarity, support arguments with evidence, and connect facts with personal perspective in order to educate and engage an audience. By living out Goal III of the Sacred Heart Goals, students moved beyond awareness to advocacy, challenging listeners to consider not only the roots of these issues but also the ways individuals and communities can respond with purpose and responsibility.

A few students were invited to share reflections on the experience, offering insight into their growth as researchers, writers, and speakers.

Juliette chose to explore wage inequality after learning about her mother’s experience returning to work. “It is truly an injustice that women are paid less than men even though they have the same education or accreditations,” she shared. “Through this project, I learned to organize my ideas in a thoughtful and informative way.”

Mia selected her topic after hearing conversations about health insurance at home. “Even though this issue may not affect me personally right now, I know that it will in later years,” she reflected. “This assignment challenged me, but it helped me grow. I felt confident and prepared presenting.”

Emma focused on an issue that many students experience but rarely discuss openly. “Learning more about this topic helped me understand how important awareness and honest conversation are, especially in a school community,” she said. “I grew as a writer and became more confident as a speaker.”

Anna centered her presentation on cyberbullying and its lasting impact on students. “Cyberbullying doesn’t stop when the school day ends,” she explained. “Writing this speech taught me how to organize ideas clearly and connect facts with emotion. It helped me feel more comfortable advocating for change.”

The eighth grade TED Talk–style presentations reflect Stuart’s commitment to developing confident, thoughtful students who use their voices with intention and act on behalf of others—skills that continue to be developed throughout the Middle School experience and beyond.
