Students in grades K-2 recently "attended" Camp Read-A-Lot where students in mixed age groups participated in a variety of activities that celebrate and honor reading development. They made bookmarks, heard virtual stories with s'mores, sang along with hot cocoa and read in special huts with flashlights. Thank you to Ms. Echternacht, Mrs. Kucharczuk, and Mrs. O'Shea, for the planning and execution of this great event!
On a related note, second graders value their independent reading time. Daily independent reading provides the opportunity for students to develop the skills and strategies demonstrated during language arts classes. Ms O’Shea likes to inspire a love of reading in her students by providing engaging texts and comfortable, flexible seating on benches, beach chairs, and cozy pillows. During independent reading, second graders engage in reading fiction and nonfiction books they have chosen for their own purpose. Also, they build up stamina for reading and see it as an important, relaxing, and pleasurable activity during the day.
