Cor Cordis Speaker Series: Panel of religious leaders explores connection between spirituality and wellness

For the January Cor Cordis Speaker Series event, Stuart welcomed a panel of religious leaders from diverse faiths to discuss how spirituality shapes identity, resilience, and wellbeing. The discussion featured Nuri Friedlander, PhD, Director of Equity and Inclusion at The Lawrenceville School; Sister Nancy Kehoe, RSCJ, PhD, an Adjunct Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychology at Harvard Medical School and a Stuart Board of Trustees member; Rabbi Adrienne Rubin of Congregation Bnai Shalom; and Rev. LaThelma Yenn-Batah, Executive Director of American Baptist Women’s Ministries. Together, they shared how spiritual practices provide grounding and help individuals navigate life’s challenges.

Each panelist offered their perspective on spirituality, emphasizing that it can take many forms—prayer, reflection, storytelling, or connection to a larger purpose. Some spoke about family traditions that shaped their faith, while others described structured rituals that provide a sense of balance. They all agreed that spirituality is deeply personal and evolves over time.

The panel also explored the connection between spirituality and mental wellbeing. The speakers shared how taking time to slow down—whether through prayer, meditation, or weekly rituals—can bring clarity and ease stress. They noted that when people feel ungrounded, they are more likely to experience anxiety and emotional exhaustion. Spiritual practices, even small ones, serve as a way to recenter and find peace.

Students asked how to integrate spirituality into daily life, and the panelists encouraged them to start small. Even a few minutes a day of reflection or gratitude can make a difference. They also emphasized the importance of surrounding oneself with a supportive community, as spirituality is often strengthened through shared experiences and relationships.

This conversation reinforced that spirituality—however it is practiced—is a valuable tool for personal growth and resilience. Thank you to our panelists for sharing their wisdom and reminding us of the importance of reflection, connection, and faith in everyday life.
