A main focus of the fourth grade poetry unit is learning that poems don't have to follow specific formats and rules or be overly complicated. Students have read many examples of free verse poetry and have enjoyed writing their own! They were recently inspired by the six-word memoir movement started by Smith Magazine. Each student wrote three six-word memoirs and chose one to workshop. This has helped us realize the significance of word choice, since, as Samuel Taylor Coleridge said, "poetry is the best words in the best order" and you can say a whole lot in just a few well-chosen words. Their six-word memoirs will be published on social media throughout the day on Tuesday, April 23rd as the 4th grade takes over the Stuart Twitter feed! You don't have to have your own Twitter account to follow @StuartCDSchool. Below is the Twitter Moment from the girls' takeover so you can see all of their poetry.
