On Saturday, February 3, the Stuart Country Day School Girls Indoor Track and Field Team won their first NJISAA Prep B Indoor Championship. With contributions from all team members, the Tartans went into the final event, the 4x400M Relay, with just a half-point lead over Villa Walsh Academy, who was favored to win the relay.
Led by senior captain Michelle Kwafo, who scored 30 points, the team scored in seven of the ten events:
Senior Michelle Kwafo led her team winning three events: 55 Meter Hurdles, 200 Meters (PR), and 55 Meter Dash (breaking a 10-year school record with a time of 7:42).
Junior Priscilla Francois scored in four events: 55 Meters, 55 Meter Hurdles, 400 Meters, and the 4X400 Meter Relay.
Sophomore Heather Kwafo scored in both the 55 Meter Dash and the 200 Meters (taking third with a personal best of 28:93).
Fellow sophomore Alex Ottomanelli contributed with points in the 400 Meters and the 4X400 Meter Relay.
In exciting High Jump competition, senior captain Alison Walsh tied her SR 5' on her last jump to win, while freshman Misha Meyer recorded her personal best to come in third, scoring six points for her team.
Sophomore Taj'hanna Tyson scored in the Shot Put while teammate sophomore Sarah Girgis came close to her personal best.
Senior captain Sonia Mohandas and junior Miranda Maley finished first and second in their heat of the 800 Meters with freshman Melanie Burgess not far behind.
A Hollywood Finish!
These results put the Tartans team in good position for the last event, the 4 x 400 Meter Relay, with a half-point lead over Villa Walsh Academy–who was favored to win the final race. Stuart senior captain Kendra Brenya led off with a personal best, followed by freshman Cara Carr who also ran a PB, followed by a personal best from Alex. Priscilla Francois, in her sixth race of the day, anchored the team to a school record 4x400 win!
