This past week ten faculty members and four students attended the NAIS People of Color Conference/Student Diversity and Leadership Conference in Nashville, TN. The focus of the conference was to support faculty, staff, and students of color and their white allies in diversity, inclusion, and equity work. Both the adults and the students spent the three-day conference engaging in workshops, listening to speakers, and participating in affinity groups. They had the opportunity to hear from such leaders in the field as Marc Lamont Hill and Lisa Ling. One of the many tweetable moments from the speeches came from Marian Wright Edelman, president of the Children's Defense Fund, who said "Teaching isn't just a job, but a calling to serve. And every child is sacred and needs our respect and love." The faculty and staff left the conference feeling refreshed, affirmed and excited to bring back all they learned to continue the diversity, inclusion and equity initiatives within the Stuart community. Since the conference was located in an entertainment hub, attendees had time to explore the live music and delicious cuisine of "Music City." Click here for photos.
