The excitement and energy was amazing on Saturday as over 1,000 girls in K-12, mentor women, parents and educators streamed onto the Stuart campus for the second annual #LEADLIKEAGIRL: A Conference for Risk-Takers and Changemakers. The day began with keynote speaker Stephanie Ruhle, MSNBC anchor and NBC News correspondent, whose presentation was titled, "Good Girls Ruhle." She told the young women in the audience that, "In 2018, a 'good girl' needs to mean something different, and everyone in this room has the POWER to change that!" Ruhle, who is a Sacred Heart parent, offered closing advice to the girls to, "live their best life," and to, "bet on themselves." Later, guests who filled Cor Unum were inspired by Gitanjali Rao, America's Top Young Scientist for 2017, who emphasized the importance of mentorship. "I wouldn't be here today without the support of mentors along the way," Rao began."If I could request one thing, it is to find a mentor and request them to mentor you in the areas that you are passionate about." Finally, the day concluded with another packed house for Stuart alumna Joanna Vargas '88, celebrity facialist and founder of Joanna Vargas Salons and Skin Care. Joanna stressed the importance of staying true to your own ideas. "You have to remember that IT'S YOUR LIFE," she said. "I knew I had a good idea. I knew at the end of the day that it didn't matter what anyone thought. From that moment on I never considered failure as an option."
In between keynotes, guests chose from over 60 workshops, panels and presentations from over 100 guest speakers, and enjoyed "Lunch with an Expert." The conference concluded with a presentation of awards for the young women who gave STEM Talks and presented at the Business Fair. Click here for the list of winners for both. Recordings of all keynote and featured speaker sessions will be available shortly. Many thanks to everyone in the Stuart community, including all of our alumnae guest speakers, who welcomed hundreds and hundreds of guests to our wonderful campus and showed them what it's really like to #LEADLIKEAGIRL!
