The Stuart track and field team won its second NJISAA Prep B Outdoor Track Championship in a row at Newark Academy on Monday, May 6. This comes after the team achieved the same back-to-back honor for indoor track championships this year. It was a total team victory with school records and many personal bests.
The scoring got started with the lone senior Priscilla Francois '19 duplicating her third place finish from last year in the 400m individual hurdles. She went on to score in four events. Also scoring in the event was Cara Carr '21 who had a personal record. Alex Ottomanelli '20 rallied back from a disqualification in the same event due to a false start to go on to win the 100m hurdles with a personal best and become the state champ in the 800m with a terrific kick.
Other team firsts came from Nia Melvin '21 in the javelin who also was lead off for the second place 4x100 team; Jasmine Hansford '20 was also on that relay team and the third place 4x400 team. Jasmine scored in four events with a second place finish in long jump and triple jump.
Also scoring in four events was Heather Kwafo '20, who had a win in the triple jump, a placing in long jump, and a personal best in the 100m and 200m.
The other big victory was Emerlee Simons '20, who broke the 10 year old school record in the 400m; Emerlee also placed in the 100m and 200m after nursing an injury and resting for nine days.
In Stuart's first time competing in the pole vault, we achieved a school record with Noelia Manion clearing an opening height of 6' and teammate Amaris Frink '21 following close behind. Both have a big future in the event.
Other big scorers for the team were Audrey Blandford '22, who took second place and achieved a personal best in the high jump, and Misha Meyer '21, who took third place overall to tie her personal best.
The weight team did well alongside Nia with fellow hoop players Laila Fair '21 scoring in the discus and Jasmine Lewis '21 with a season best in the shot put.
Taj'hanna Tyson '20 scored in her fourth consecutive prep shot put championship - two indoor and now two outdoor. Also in the shot put was the versatile Priscilla with a second place and a personal best. Sarah Girgis '20 and Morgan John '21 did well in the discus.
Another multi-talented athlete was Lia Bull-Krieg '21, who scored in two relays and earned a personal best in the javelin with a seventh place finish.
Cara placed fourth in the triple jump, seventh in the long jump, and had a personal record in the 100 hurdles.
The distance group with Alex did well as Sophia Scheulov '21 had a personal record in the 800m and scored on the 4x400 relay. Oliva Evans '21 also had a personal record in the 800m and keeps improving. Melanie Burgess '21 ran the 1600m as she continues to get stronger.
The Prep B championships was a total team effort scoring in all but two of the 17 events. With one senior on the squad, the Stuart ladies have a lot to look forward to. More importantly, they're learning how to prepare and see how hard work can lead to improvement and enjoyment at the same time as long as they stick together. Click here for photos.
