We're pleased to announce that juniors Vivian Chen and Shirley Xie have been selected as 2020 New Jersey Governor's School Scholars. Shirley will attend a virtual version of the New Jersey Governor's School in the Sciences hosted by Drew University from July 12 to August 1, 2020, and Vivian is attending a virtual version of the Governor's School of Engineering and Technology hosted by Rutgers University from June 28 to July 24, 2020. They are among a group of outstanding high school juniors from all parts of the state who have been chosen to participate in the program. This year, the COVID-19 pandemic requires that the experience is on-line, but the program is dedicated to offering this year's scholars the same depth of experience.
Both Vivian and Shirley have shared their excitement about being selected and how Stuart has fostered their interest and growth in STEM.
Vivian: I am very thrilled and grateful to participate in the NJ Governor's School of Engineering & Technology program this summer, albeit virtually. Being in such a supportive and motivating environment at Stuart has enabled me to pursue my interests and has offered me countless opportunities to experience various aspects of STEM. I grew my interests beginning in my freshmen year when I joined the FTC robotics team at Stuart and later by taking classes like AP Computer Science Principles that heightened my global awareness of technological advancements and their impacts. As someone highly interested in robotics and computer science, I am excited to meet other rising NJ seniors and bond over our similar passions as well as research with collegiate mentors in the STEM field to continue learning and growing into an enthusiastic member of the STEM community.
Shirley: I’m really excited and grateful to be a part of the Governor’s School for the Sciences this year. Even though it's going to be slightly different with an online format, I’m sure it will be an amazing experience. Stuart has really opened up a lot of opportunities for me to pursue my scientific interests -- this being one of them -- and it's incredible that I’m surrounded by such a passionate community that encourages me to grow as a scholar.
