Second graders launch marshmallow catapults for study on simple machines

By Elena Nickerson
Lower School STEM Specialist

The second graders have been learning about the mechanics and design of simple machines. While investigating the function of levers, they applied their knowledge of levers and fulcrums to build a catapult using marshmallows, skewers, a rubber band and spoon. They were challenged to use the catapult to launch a load. As they tested their design, they noticed how the force of the lever and location of the fulcrum affected the distance the load traveled. Applying the engineering design process, they used the test data to redesign and make modifications as needed. Pretending to defend the castle and hit a target with their catapult was a highlight.
