During the two weeks leading up to Spring Break Stuart sophomores are given the opportunity to either travel abroad or stay in New Jersey to participate in the SHAEP Project-Based Learning program. This year, 18 Stuart students have partnered with 10 students from the STEMCivics Charter School in Ewing and the Trenton Circus Squad for an "Adventure Under the Big Top."
Every day the students travel to the Trenton Circus Squad located in the famous Roebling Factory in Trenton to plan all aspects of a circus performance including imagining a story and discovering, learning and practicing circus skills. The students have been working with Tom von Oehsen, program director at Trenton Circus Squad and coach Liam Quat. Tom has plenty of experience with Sacred Heart education as he spent many years as the director of admission at Princeton Academy. The goal of the program is to be ready for a full circus performance in just two weeks! Everyone is very excited, involved, having fun, working hard and very tired at the end of each day. See photos from the circus training in the gallery. The students are also learning from expert performers and costume professionals including Monique from The Costume Store in Trenton who taught the students to create characters by applying makeup. They also had a Skype interview with Brigitte Poupart, a French Canadian woman who produces the new Cirque du Soleil show "Luizia." Stay tuned for the upcoming circus performance this Friday, March 10 at the Roebling Factory in Trenton! Learn more about the Trenton Circus Squad here.
