Enrichment Camp Course Descriptions

A class will be cancelled if enrollment minimums are not met.  In that event the fee for the class will be refunded.   Students taking Academic Enrichment classes during July will also be able to participate in Stuart's World Cultures and Travels Camp ( grades Pre-School - 8, Co-educational)

 

Spanish  Fundamentals
July 7-11
1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
Open to students  reviewing and / or preparing for Spanish I                                                                       

Are you entering Spanish I this fall or are you hoping to review what you have learned in the past year in your level 1 Spanish class?  Come and review the basics of the Spanish language.  You'll have fun practicing the language and you'll have a head start for the next academic year.

Are You Ready for Algebra?                                                      
July 7-18
9:00 am – Noon

Students taking this course will work on topics to prepare them for Algebra I:  variables, percents, rates, proportions, ratios, etc.  Lots of hands-on activities and solid practice will have participants ready for success in Algebra I!  This course DOES NOT replace a Pre-Algebra. ( Offered again  by Ms. Claudia Travis during the week of August 11-22)

Workshop in writing for Grades 4,5,6
July 14-18
1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
Open to students entering grades 4,5,6

Writing is an art !  You will spend the week learning to organize your thoughts through your writing.  Students may feel free to bring samples of their stories and poems so that they can learn to write even more clearly.

Driver's Education
August 4-15

The class will be held on the Stuart campus and is open to students from any school.

This course will satisfy the requirement of 30 hours of class instruction  required to apply for the learner’s permit.  The Class meets three hours per day for two weeks. A certified driving instructor will teach the course.

Middle School Writer                                                     WAIT LIST, ONLY

Open to students entering grades 6,7,8

This course is for students who are ready to develop both skill and style as writers.  Students will read and write in several genres – short story, poetry and non-fiction and will be expected to develop their sense of fundamental techniques of good writing, from basic grammar and usage to figurative language and plot structure.  Required to write daily, revise and produce polished final drafts, students will begin to develop a sense of their strengths as writers.

Algebra in Review
August 11-22
1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
Open to students who are reviewing Algebra.

This course is for students who have completed  Algebra I or who are entering the second  half of Algebra I.   Students enrolling in the course will re-familiarize themselves with the major units of Algebra:  writing and solving linear equations, inequalities, and quadratic functions; graphing linear functions; square and cube roots; and simplifying rational expressions.  Students will need a graphing calculator to visualize concepts and gain experience fitting lines to data.  Students should NOT take this course in lieu of Algebra I, nor to advance from a regular to an honors sequence as the scope of this course is too limited for that purpose.

Open to students entering grades 6,7,8,9

Good organizational skills can help you to make a smooth transition to the next academic year.  Plan to learn about the way to keep papers, projects, homework and sleepovers all in one place so that you know what you are doing all the time.  It's never too early to integrate these practical ideas into your academic life.

Write to the Point!
August 18-22

Open to Middle and Upper School students

Students will practice writing persuasive and analytical essays.  Class activities will include pre-writing, impromtu essay writing, editing, peer editing, and proofreading.

Practice SAT essay writing
August 18-22
1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
Open to students in High School

This course prepares students for the writing section of the SAT. Students are grouped according to shared strengths and weaknesses. We also focus on efficient test-taking strategies and anxiety-reducing techniques that can help each student maximize his or her score.  Students practice writing in timed situations.

Practice SAT Math skills
August 25-29
9:00 to noon
Open to students in High School

This class will help you to develop the skills and confidence needed to perform well on the mathematics sections of the new SAT.   Course will include opportunities to take practice SAT tests under simulated actual test conditions.  Students will be shown the strategies and techniques needed to solve math problems quickly and correctly.  Course will also offer opportunities to review the highlights of Algebra, Geometry, Statistics, Probability and Data Analysis.

Open to students who have completed Algebra 1 and Geometry.

Mr. Arfin has been an SAT math instructor. He has extensive experience teaching at the high school and university level.

Open to students entering grades 5,6,7,8
