Upper School
The Upper School curriculum is a purposeful indication of Stuart's philosophy and mission and meets the interests and needs of a diverse student body within a challenging college-preparatory program. Students are expected to master a variety of skills, including cogent prose, mathematical and analytical reasoning, conflict resolution, and persuasive speech. Advanced Placement classes are offered in all academic disciplines. The program of study recognizes the values we deem essential to a full life: discipline, integrity, kindness, and responsibility.
Extracurricular activities are an integral part of life in the Upper School. Participation in team sports such as field hockey, cross country, basketball, tennis, lacrosse, and track provides opportunities to develop teamwork skills and to represent Stuart in competition against other schools. Two major theater productions are presented each year, a fall drama and a spring musical. Students develop literary, photographic, artistic, and administrative skills in the course of publishing the school newspaper, The Tartan; the literary magazine, The Thistle; and the yearbook, LaSource. The Social Committee sponsors a variety of activities.
Each Upper School student contributes to those in need through some form of community service. Active caring on the part of faculty, staff, and students is at the very core of Sacred Heart education. Through the program in Religious Studies and Campus Ministry, this concern for others is carried out by active commitment in the Princeton area, inner-city Trenton, Appalachia, and through specific national and international programs. The Student Council Outreach Committee also provides opportunities for service and ministry through its various programs in the school and community.
