Community Service –
Upper School
The Community Service Program at Stuart models the Sacred Heart commitment to education, which includes "a social awareness which impels to action." The program is designed to help students learn about the different needs of the wider community and to respond actively to those needs with their gifts in accordance with Christian principles.
All students in the Upper School have an on=going community service requirement during the school year. Each student is required to work 50 hours each year, during free school time, after school, or on weekends. These hours must be completed following a specific format for each grade. Additional hours may be fulfilled through participation in other service activities such as soup kitchen, fundraising runs/walks, and beach clean-ups.
A summer program, pre-approved by the Director of Community Service, may fulfill the required school year commitment. Many students work in Stuart's summer programs, which serve inner-city children, or in the Appalachia Service Project doing housing rehabilitation.
Students keep a record of their service hours on a time sheet given to them at the beginning of the year, signed by a supervisor after each visit, and submitted at the end of the year for approval.
Each student receives a pass or fail grade on her report card at the end of the year, depending upon completion of service requirements.
