Middle School Life

Middle School is a time of many changes for young women which makes these years exciting.  At Stuart the Middle School students’ program becomes more individualized; they move from class to class and work on a more independent level. In addition to course work, Stuart’s Middle School offers extracurricular activities such as varied arts activities, the sports program and community service opportunities. Co-curricular programs include interaction with other Sacred Heart schools through pen pal communication and exchanges, field trips to cultural and historic sites, and social events with other schools in the area.
Advisory Students are assigned to small groups, which serve as the foundation for a variety of activities, such as student government, community service, reflection, etc.. Regularly scheduled meetings provide opportunities for the students to plan activities and to discuss questions and concerns which arise during the year. Each group has a faculty advisor.
Assignment books Stuart’s Middle School provides assignment books for all the students. These are distributed the first day of school.
Book bags Book bags should be emptied at the beginning of the day and stored in the proper location until dismissal time.
Food and drink should be consumed only in the Dining Room. They are not allowed in the hallways, resource center, library, computer room or classrooms. At times there are exceptions made in the classroom with permission from the Head of School and with teacher supervision. Gum chewing is not allowed during school hours.
Gouter This period occurs mid-morning and offers students the time to have a snack, socialize with friends or chat with a faculty member. Students may bring their own snack or with a “debit card” purchase something from the Dining Room.
Lockers At the beginning of the academic year each student is assigned a locker. Students are to keep their lockers neat and orderly. Students may change lockers only with permission from the Head of Middle School. The Headmistress may, at any time, open lockers to inspect or search the contents of a locker or similar storage facility.
MS Messenger is a weekly newsletter informing the Middle School community of interesting and important information. It is given to students on Wednesdays and can also be accessed through the Stuart website.
Reflection All students are required to attend Reflection at 7:55 a.m. This is a time set aside each day for prayer, reflection, readings, music, updates on school events and special activities. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, Reflection takes place in the Middle School Resource Center, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Advisory. Students interested in participating in Reflection should sign up with the Middle School office. Every eighth grader is expected to conduct one Reflection during the course of the year.
Textbooks A list of the texts being used during the school year will be provided on the Stuart website in early June. State Fund Books are used in some of the classes.  Students who lose or damage these books will be asked to reimburse the school. The Stuart Parent Association runs a used book sale where texts may be purchased at considerable savings. Students should be sure to write their names on all their textbooks and calculators.
