iPads: Enhancing Curriculum at Stuart

Stuart’s iPad Program began last year as a pilot program with a review of iPad benefits and applications at all grade levels, K-12.

We are excited that this year we launched our iPad Program using iPads in ALL grades, Kindergarten through grade 12. Lower School (K-5) students access iPads through class carts (as they do laptops), and all girls in grades 6-12 have been given an iPad2 for one-to-one computing.

iPad Boot Camp - This summer every student in grades 6-12 went through an intensive iPad Boot Camp where they learned the operating basics, discussed how to be responsible while using technology, and learned how to use applications such as email, notes and sharing documents through Google Docs.  The school year has started, and as teachers begin to integrate the use of iPads into their curriculum, girls are using this very exciting technology tool every day in nearly every class.

High Speed Internet Access Campus-Wide - We have made considerable investment in our school facilities here at Stuart to ensure that faculty and students can take full advantage of the iPads. This summer our campus was completely re-wired for upgraded high speed wireless Internet which extends outside the building out to our turf field and down to the stream behind the school for real-time science applications. Our faculty development budget has been doubled this year, and considerable resources are being spent so teachers can take full advantage of the technology to advance their curriculum.

The iPad is a powerful new tool. It's one of many emerging technologies available to educators and students at Stuart. Our girls use technology in so many ways – they create videos for their classes (now with their iPads!), they take online courses through the Online School for Girls, and also specially designed courses by Stuart faculty. We use an online math program to individualize instruction to augment classroom work; in Spanish they Skype with professors in Argentina and our Kindergarteners talk with classes all over the world on Twitter through #Kinderchat.

The iPad is also helping Stuart to be a greener campus - we are going as paperless as possible by using online options for communication between teachers and students; Our girls use Moodle, Google Docs, Dropbox, and Turn It On. In addition, the technology will be used to encourage dialogue between the students as teachers are setting up blogs as a way for students to share ideas amongst themselves.

Rich with Sacred Heart tradition and heritage, Stuart is emerging as a leading innovator in the use of technology in education to equip our young women with the 21st century skills they will need to think globally, lead with innovation and change the world.

  • Hard work, tenacity, and vision earns rookie Sparks robotics team 4th Place at FTC NJ State Championships

The Sparks, Stuart's all-girl, rookie robotics team, started out the year with almost zero experience in robotics. Just five months later, their hard work, tenacity, and vision earned them a 4th place finish (out of 24 teams in their division) at the FTC NJ State Championships today! This is truly an incredible accomplishment. With their clever strategy and reliability, “Sparky” was able to win 4 out of our 5 qualifying matches, beating out many bigger robots and more experienced teams.

  • Rookie “Sparks” Robotics Team is heading to State Championships!

Sparks, Stuart's rookie robotics team, is headed to Newark this Sunday for the New Jersey FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) championship event! The Sparks earned a spot at this event by outperforming other more experienced teams at a previous qualifying tournament—an amazing accomplishment for their first year as a team! After spending the year working diligently, creatively, and collaboratively to design, build, and program a robot, the girls will compete this Sunday with other robotics teams in the tri-state area for a ticket to the FTC world championship event later this spring.

  • Note Cards Go Digital

7th Grade history classes are beginning of their yearly research project on the Middle Ages. One of the twists is this year the students will be creating their research notecards online. This provides many benefits from giving the teacher simultaneous access to the students to provide better guidance, the cards are already formatted and help inform the students of the information they will need to create an accurate bibliography and best is that you can not lose your cards on the bus! This is just another way Stuart students are finding a way to use technology to make their learning more effective and efficient.

  • Grade 5 Visits with Madrid Students via Skype

Last Friday, Sra. Quinlan's Grade 5 Spanish class enjoyed the chance to strengthen their language skills via a new approach. The class visited with 8-year-old María via Skype! María ia a student at Madrid's Claret School, and a friend of Sra's. María spoke with the girls—in Spanish, of course—about life at her school for Grade 5 students.

  • Biology Students Benefit Nature with Technology

Last week we read about Grade 9 biology students who were working on a study of the deciduous trees on Stuart’s nature trail. This week, students in Mrs. Soos’s class continued the project in the lab using an app called Leafsnap on their iPads to identify trees using photos of the leaves captured with the built-in camera on the iPad2.

  • Eye on the iPad: Ms. Lesinski, Religion; Ms. Fazzina, English

This week's edition of Eye on the iPad I highlight two teachers who have found innovative uses for the iPad in the classroom. 8th Grade students write and record songs in Religion class and quiz themselves on vocabulary words in English class.

  • Grade 9 Biology Integrates Tech and Nature

The 9th grade biology classes have been working on a study of Stuart's own deciduous tree ecosystem along the nature trail. Using their iPads to help identify trees and note orientation, students collected extensive data of the flora along a 75 meter transect, measured geographic position and noted the quality of growth as they determined succession of our woods. Come see the transect transcribed on bulletin boards outside the biology lab.

  • Eye on the iPad: 7th Grade History

This week Robert Missonis' 7th Grade History Class used the Simple Mind app to create mind maps of the lives and accomplishments of Saint Benedict and Gregory the Great.

  • Eye on the iPad: 7th Grade Spanish

This week, 7th grade Spanish students used the iPad to explore the geography of Northern Spain as they began a Project Based Learning Unit in which they will develop their own fictional city.

  • Eye on the iPad: 8th Grade Science

Mr. Richardson has really been taking advantage of the iPad in his Eighth Grade science classroom.
