Summer Camps and Enrichment Programs at Stuart Country Day School

Arts, Sports and Academic Enrichment

Stuart's summer program includes academic enrichment, arts activities, and a day camp for boys and girls as well as sports camps for girls only. In 2012, the programs will run from June 4 through August 24 and children may sign up for a variety of courses. Please click on the tabs below to learn more.

Registration and full payment are due as early as possible to ensure a place in the camp.

Camp Stuart (Pre-School through Kindergarten)

For boys and girls entering Pre-School, Junior Kindergarten, and Kindergarten

Camp Stuart offers summer fun in one-, two- and three-week sessions. Campers engage in a variety of activities, including arts and crafts, nature hikes, drama, music and of course, playtime. Each week has a different theme.

Campers need to bring a bag lunch.

Explorers and STEM Adventures Camps (Pre-School through Grade 8)

Explorers and STEM Adventures Camp

July 2–6, 9–13, 16–20, 23–27, July 30–Aug. 3

For boys and girls entering Pre-School through Grade 8

Stuart’s Explorers and STEM Adventures Camp offers campers a wide range of activities each day in outdoor and indoor activities. During the 5 week-long sessions campers will explore space, wizards, pirates, scales, and slime, and green thumbs in our beautiful green brick and glass building.

Outdoor play is a pleasure on Stuart’s 55-acre campus and Nature Trail. Half- and full-day options are available so that campers can participate in other enrichment classes and programs that are being offered during the same week.

Campers need to bring a bag lunch.

For boys and girls entering Grades 1–5

StuArts Camp offers summer arts fun in one- and two-week programs. StuArts is a visual and performing arts program which culminates each Friday with an opportunity for students to perform and exhibit their work.

Visual Arts Sequence
Water color, clay, chalk, printmaking, jewelry making, papier mache and visits to local art museums

Performing Arts Sequence
Folk dance, mime, improvisation, musical theater, jazz dance and skits

Middle School Performing Arts camp combines fun and a challenging theatrical-arts experience in a two-week program. The camp offers students the opportunity to participate in drama, dance and music classes on a rotating basis. The last day of camp features a performance by the campers in Stuart’s state-of-the-art theater facility.

Students will read and write in several genres—short story, poetry, and non-fiction memoir—using readings as models for their own work. In their writing, students will be expected to develop fundamental techniques of good writing, from basic grammar and usage to figurative language and plot structure. Writing daily, revising, and producing polished final drafts; students will begin to develop a sense of their strengths as writers.

Are You Ready for Algebra (Prior to Algebra 1)

Are You Ready for Algebra

Two Weeks: Aug. 13–24

Prior to Algebra 1

Students taking this course prior to Algebra I will work on topics to prepare them for Algebra I: variables, percentages, rates, proportions, ratios, etc. Technology enables girls to solve problems and to make mathematical conjectures in a variety of ways. Lots of hands-on activities and solid practice will have participants ready for success in Algebra I.

Following Algebra 1

This course is for students who have completed Algebra I and are preparing for Algebra II. Students enrolling in the course will re-familiarize themselves with the major units of algebra: writing and solving linear equations, inequalities, and quadratic functions; graphing linear functions; square and cube roots; and simplifying rational expressions. Students will need a graphing calculator to visualize concepts and gain experience fitting lines to data.

Long time field hockey coach Missy Bruvik runs this field hockey camp specifically designed for players to learn the fundamental skills of the game. Emphasis will be placed on techniques in small-sided games which guarantees both personal player development as well as developing an understanding of team concepts.

Newly appointed Head Lacrosse Coach Caitlin Grant will coach the lacrosse camp, for the player who has aspirations to improve her fundamental skills and learn more about the game through small and full field drills and competition.

Summer Institute for the Gifted at Stuart

Summer Institute for the Gifted

Stuart hosts the only SIG program in the Central New Jersey area.

The Summer Institute for the Gifted Day Program provides instruction in over 30 courses during its regular academic schedule and engages students in recreational activities every day. Courses are taught at levels appropriate for academically gifted students, covering humanities, mathematics and sciences, and multi-disciplinary courses. Every student selects three courses and has a recreational period. Each class meets five times a week for 90 minutes each. Registration is handled directly through the Summer Institute for the Gifted.

Drivers Education

Drivers Education

The Windboro Driving School will be providing the 30 hour Classroom Driver Education Course at Stuart Country Day School of the Sacred Heart. The course will be taught by Mr. Melvin L. Jones, M.Ed. Mr. Jones is a former teacher in the West Windsor-Plainsboro School District and the parent of a Stuart alumna. He has taught behind the wheel driver education for both the West Windsor-Plainsboro and Princeton Regional School Districts.He is also certified as a Defensive Driving Instructor by the National Safety Council.During the course students will prepare and take the New Jersey State Driver Knowledge Examination. The course will also cover a wide range of topics, to include Defensive Driving Strategies. Course fee: $405.

Open to talented and resourceful students entering Grades 2 through 6, Stuart’s Summer Stars program offers students an atmosphere of fun while supplementing their academic and cultural school programs. Summer Stars participants will be inspired, stimulated and motivated in areas such as humanities, science and mathematics during the four-week session.

With a goal to teach the Stars that learning is an enjoyable and life-long endeavor, Summer Stars participants have a fun-filled classroom learning experience supplemented with field trips, guest performers and more.

The 2012 program will run from July 5–31, weekdays from 9 AM–2 PM. The final celebration will take place on Friday, July 27.

Summer Stars is an academic enrichment program designed to strengthen Stuart’s ties with the community through service to children. The program is only open to residents of Trenton, N.J.
